Cold-formed C section

C purlins, cut to length and punched to your drawing

A C purlin is a steel channel with a lip turned in on each flange. It carries roof sheets across the rafters and wall sheets across the columns, and it is the most common purlin on small and mid-size sheds.

We roll it from 1.0 to 3.0 mm thick with a web of 80 to 300 mm, punch the holes on the line and cut every piece to the length on your list, up to 12 m.

Where C purlins go

  • Roof purlins spanning from one rafter to the next, on sheds where each bay is designed as a single span.
  • Wall girts fixed across the columns to carry the side cladding.
  • Mezzanine joists, often two C sections bolted back to back, under a deck sheet floor.
  • Cladding rails around doors, louvers and openings, and framing for canopies.

For long sheds where the purlins run continuously over many frames, a Z purlin lapped over the rafter usually does the job with a lighter section. Your engineer will say which one the design needs.

How we supply them

  • Cut to length. Every piece is cut to the length on your cutting list, so there is no trimming or offcut on site.
  • Punched to drawing. Cleat holes, sag rod holes and flange holes are punched as the section is rolled.
  • Bundled and marked. Bundles are marked with the member number from your drawing, so the erection team can lift each one straight to its bay.
  • Delivered in lengths up to 12 m by road, with the coil's mill test certificate.

For Yamaha in Greater Noida we made a mixed set of C purlins and box sections in revised thicknesses after a layout change, delivered in 72 hours with zero deviation at inspection. Read the Yamaha job.

What to send for a quote

C purlins are priced per kg. Send the section (web, flange, lip), the gauge, the hole positions, the lengths and the quantity of each, or a drawing that shows them. If you have only the shed size, send that and we will suggest a layout for your engineer to check.

We do not publish load tables for C purlins. The section and gauge should come from your engineer's design, and we roll to it.

Send the C purlin cutting list or drawing and we will price it by weight.

Questions buyers ask us

What sizes of C purlin do you roll?

Web depths from 80 to 300 mm, flanges from 40 to 80 mm and lips from 12 to 30 mm, in thicknesses from 1.0 to 3.0 mm. Send the exact section from your drawing and we will confirm it against our rolls before we quote.

Can I get galvanised C purlins?

Yes. We roll C purlins in galvanised, galvalume and POSMAC coated steel as well as plain HR and CR. Coated purlins suit sheds where the steel stays bare or the air is damp.

Can two C purlins be used back to back?

Yes. Two C sections bolted back to back are often used for mezzanine joists and heavier members. We punch the bolt holes in both pieces so they line up.

What is the longest C purlin you supply?

12 m in one piece. That is the longest we roll and the longest we send by road.

Do you have a load table for C purlins?

No. We do not publish load tables for our purlins. The section and gauge should come from your engineer's design, and we roll to that.
